Supplements for Oral Use
- Lutein
 
Lutein is an antioxidant; neutralizes free radicals; improves vision; retards cataract aggravation. Take 10-30 mg of lutein daily, in divided doses, for many months. Use it with fat or oil containing food. Works better with zeaxanthin.
- N-Acetylcysteine
 
N-Acetylcysteine is an antioxidant; neutralizes free radicals; slows the progression of cataract; alleviates symptoms. Take 0.5-1.5 g of N-acetylcysteine daily, in divided doses, for many months.
- Rutin
 
Rutin is an antioxidant; neutralizes free radicals; improves vision; retards cataract aggravation. Take 1-3 g of rutin daily, in divided doses, for many months.
- Zeaxanthin
 
Zeaxanthin is an antioxidant; neutralizes free radicals; improves vision; retards cataract aggravation. Take 2-4 mg of zeaxanthin daily, in divided doses, for many months. Use it with fat or oil containing food. Works better with lutein.
- Alpha lipoic acid

Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant; neutralizes free radicals; retards cataract aggravation. Take 400-600 mg of alpha lipoic acid daily, in divided doses, for many months.
- Antioxidants

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals; they retard cataract aggravation. Take antioxidants daily, in divided doses, for many months, as suggested on the label.
- Beta-carotene

Beta-carotene is an antioxidant; neutralizes free radicals; prevents cataract aggravation. Take 25,000-50,000 IU of beta-carotene daily, in divided doses, for many months. Do not use synthetic beta-carotene if you are a smoker. It may increase the risk of some type of cancers.
